A candy thermometer is a kitchen utensil used to measure the temperature of candy mixtures during cooking. A candy thermometer is similar to other digital thermometers such as a meat thermometer, jelly deep fry thermometer or even instant read thermometers.
A candy thermometer is designed to withstand high temperatures, and can be used to measure the temperature of both candy mixtures and finished candies. A digital candy thermometer usually has a metal stem that is inserted into the candy mixture, and a glass or plastic bulb at the end of the stem that contains mercury or alcohol. The mercury or alcohol expands as the mixture heats up, and this expansion is used to measure the temperature of the mixture. You can choose to buy a glass candy thermometer or if you’d like a plastic one which might be more child friendly.
